3-Dimensional Hunting

Currently one of the most effective methods for monitoring active predators in the field is through accelerometer tagging and analysis to determine overall dynamic body acceleration, or ODBA. ODBA is a method of analysis that combines all 3 axes of acceleration (X, Y, Z) into a cumulative acceleration score that has been documented as an effective proxy for energetic cost in terrestrial mammals. Using the accelerometer data collected during metabolic dive trials I will calculate ODBA and determine the metabolic cost per unit of acceleration (g) for these species as well as calculate any necessary conversion factors. This will allow me to explore the applicability of ODBA for use in the field with our study animals.
